How Much is My Car Worth?
Feb 4th
Car Price Guides
Whether you’re considering trading your car.through a dealership, selling it privately, refinancing it, or if you simply want to know what it’s worth, chances are you’ll be counting on a car price guide to assign a fair value to your vehicle. Car price guides can be accessed at the library, credit unions or banks, car dealerships, and online.
While that sounds easy enough, you might be surprised to discover the amount of information that is taken into consideration in determining the value of your automobile. Since a variety of car value guides are on the market, there may also be discrepancies that exist between one value guide and another. For this reason, it is up to the car’s owner to make sure that the car is valued at its maximum value.
Getting Started
While there are several car value guides available, the function of each is quite similar. Basically, you will begin by indicating why you are trying to place a value on your car. Used car values will vary based on whether the car is being traded, sold privately, or refinanced.
Identifying Your Car
Once you’ve identified the type of valuation needed, you will select the year, make, and model of your used car. Classic or antique cars are often classified separately. You will often be asked to select the vehicle’s trim package. Note that while an EX model might be a base model on one automobile, it might be the high-end model on another automobile. In selecting the trim package, many car owners make the mistake of guessing. This could result in assigning a less valuable trim to your car, thus reducing its overall value.
The next section of the car price guide will ask for specific information pertaining to your used car. The open-ended section of the requested information will include current mileage and your zip code. The zip code is required to determine the part of the country that you live in. Car prices and values vary from region to region.
Options and Upgrades
Following this section, you will likely find a checklist with all of the available options listed. You check off the features that your car has. This will include features such as power door locks, power windows, passenger side airbags, alloy wheels, leather, sunroof, and other components that are often considered options or upgrades. It is very important that features are not overlooked. It is a good idea to refer to the car’s original paperwork for this information. A car with a high number of extra features is referred to as loaded. A loaded car has a higher value than a base model car.
Indicating Your Car’s Condition
Finally, you will be asked to rank your car’s mechanical condition and appearance. Your choices will include:
- Excellent
- Good
- Fair
- Poor
A car with an excellent rating must run like new, and have no mechanical, body, or interior damage. All features and components must be in excellent working order. Repair and maintenance records are required.
In order for a car to be considered in good condition, the car must have little or no damage. Minor scratches and dings are acceptable. This car must be fully operable, without the need of any type of repairs.
Fair conditioned vehicles might need minor repairs and may have some body or interior damage. The damage should not impede the car’s ability to be driven.
Cars that need extensive cosmetic or mechanical repairs should be considered to be in poor condition.
Obviously, the better condition your car is in, the more the car is worth. Unfortunately, opinions often differ in this subjective analysis of a car’s condition. As an owner, be prepared to justify your position on the ranking you assigned to the car’s condition. This area has the most room for debate and the dealership or private buyer may try to convince you to lessen the value of your car based on their opinion of the car’s condition.
Results
Once this final step is completed, you will be directed to a chart that will indicate the fair value of your car. If you’re using an online car price guide, the website will list the fair value, without requiring you to refer to a chart.
How to Use the Results
Even though the first step was to clarify whether you were selling your car to an individual or trading it in at a dealership, most car value guides will still provide results for each scenario. In fact, many online pricing guides will even reveal what your car is worth if considered in excellent, good, fair, or poor condition. This overall snapshot of values can be used to help you decide whether to haggle or lose a deal over the condition of your car. In other words, if the dealer is offering to accept your car as a trade in good condition and you feel strongly that the car is in excellent condition, the value results may indicate a difference of such an insignificant amount that it may not be worth haggling over.
Quick Tips for Making the Car as Valuable to the Buyer as It Is to the Seller
If trading your car in at a dealership, cosmetic touch ups, such as those listed below, will usually will not add value to your car. However, when dealing with an individual in a private sale, these tips can make a big difference. Keep in mind, though, that the price of the repair, or touch up, should not exceed the value it adds to your car.
- Keep all repair and maintenance records up to date.
- Always maintain the condition and basic upkeep of your car. This includes oil changes, exterior washes, carpet care, and leather cleaner on the interior.
- Get rid of odors with an air freshener designed specifically for automobiles.
- If the car is especially unkempt, consider having it professionally detailed.
- Replace worn, missing, or damaged floor mats with new, inexpensive mats.
- Consider repairing loose headliners.
- Repair and broken glass or cracked windshields.
- Remove any bumper stickers or specialty tags.
Important Reminders
Always know what your car is worth before discussing the sale or trade with other parties. The dealership will often value a car at a significantly lower rate than the car is actually worth. Obviously, this is an attempt to make as much money on the deal as possible. Work as hard to save money as the dealership works to make money.
For a private sale, have a Carfax report available. Strangers are often suspicious, particularly if the deal seems too good to be true. The potential purchaser might think that the car was previously wrecked or otherwise damaged, so presenting a Carfax report may be helpful in this situation.
Your car may not sell at the price you think it’s worth. If the car does not sell after being listed for reasonable amount of time, decide whether you should take it off the market or reduce your price. Just because the car is valued at a price does not mean it will sell for that price. Factors such as the economy, similar cars listed in the area, and dealership promotions and rebates will have an impact on how easily your car sells.

Key-Pointers When Buying A Second Hand Car
Feb 4th
Buying a car from an individual or from a local car dealer is one tedious task if the objective is to purchase a second car that is still in good running condition. A buyer would never trade his hard-earned money with just a complete wasted used car. Whether new or used, when buying a car, it should be treated with the same importance and value.
There are things to take into consideration before buying the car and these are:
1. Educate yourself as a consumer
2. Prepare a list of your needs. Prioritize between the necessities and the wants.
3. Determine the budget and the kind of car that would best fit.
4. Make a selection by models and types. Narrowing them will be helpful.
5. Research both online and offline by dealers.
6. Know the value of the second hand car in the market.
7. Research the Vehicle Identification Numbers and history.
8. Take a mechanic when checking the car whether buying from a friend or a dealer.
9. Never shy away from asking questions.
10. If there’s a gut feeling about it not being good, don’t be afraid to walk away.
Bringing a mechanic along is always a good strategy. Make sure your mechanic inspects the totality of the car, from the history down to its last screw. It should be parked on a level spot. You should make certain that it was driven for about an hour. This should make it a good time to make the inspection. Always make it on a well lit surrounding and in broad daylight.
How to inspect it thoroughly:
Checking the exterior. Walk around to see if there is damage to the body. The corners of the car should be shaken and bounced up and down to see if the shock absorbers are still in good condition. Make sure that the wheel bearings do not make any sound when trying to pull the front tires by tugging them. Open the doors lift the hood and the trunk to see if all the rubber seals are still in place. This will also tell if there’s anything loose around the hinges. Check for signs of repaint. There will be difference in the color because shops can never duplicate the original paint of the car. Ask someone to turn on all the lights outside of the car and look if all are working. Cars with only 30,000 miles of travel must still have its original tires. Beware if you find a car with only a few miles of travel but has new tires. When the test drive is done, check the discs of the brakes, this should still be clean and smooth. Check the windshield for cracks.
Checking the Interior. Though it sounds odd, smell the insides of the car. Sniff under mats and the carpet. If it smells like mildew then it’s a sign that there is a leak somewhere or that the car may have undergone flood damage. Switch on the air-conditioning to make sure that it really turns the whole inside of the car cold. Next, try the heater. Try out all lights inside as well and never forget to blow the horn. Also try all the seat adjustments. The upholstery should still be in good shape too. There will be a lot more to check and here is where the mechanic can help the buyer.
Looking inside the trunk. Once more, smell the insides and check for any signs of leaks. Make sure that some basic car tools are still present for the new user.
Checking under the hood. Feel the wiring for any cracks or brittleness. Squeeze the hoses and the fan belt for any cuts and possible electrical tape patches. Do not take off the cap of the radiator until its cool enough. The greenish color indicates a good condition where the coolant is. Beware of stains and dirty-whitish color on the radiator. Again, let the rest be checked by the mechanic like the batteries.
Checking under the car. Lie down if you must and use an emergency light to see the engine underneath. Feel any signs of residue. Check the pipes and examine any possibility of heavy rusting.
Do the Test Drive. The owner or dealer should not stop a buyer from going over about twenty minutes of test drive. This is a special time to thoroughly look for any problems with the air-conditioning, heater, steering wheel, brakes, transmission, and most importantly, the comfort. Feel everything; its okay to try it on a hump or a slight bumpy road to really experience the performance. Listen carefully to check any rattles. Have a pen and paper, flashlight, gloves, magnet, towel, blanket and even CD or tape when checking a car out.

Get An Internet Based Merchant Account
Feb 4th
As more businesses move their trade onto the Internet, they are finding it necessary to conduct their affairs through the aid of an Internet based merchant account. This type of account is similar to a personal credit card, but it is issued to businesses as a means of letting them accept credit card payments that are underwritten by a responsible lender, like a bank or another financial agent. A business that does not already operate on the Web can increase visibility in the cyber marketplace and enhance sales by building a Website to promote the company and by accepting credit card payments at the site.
However, to be able to process credit card payments, a company will need the support of an Internet based merchant account. This special account provides the business with the financial and technical means of facilitating credit card payments from its customers at any point on the globe where they have a computer and Internet access. When applying for a merchant account, the company needs to be able to prove it has a solid credit history, the ability to pay for support services in a timely and responsible manner, and the non-involvement in distasteful or unethical services. The company owner should scrutinize available merchant account vendors to find the best terms for his or her business. For example, some account providers charge a variety of fees that can quickly add up. A small or new business owner, or someone who is working from a home based business, may not be able to afford all the fees that can be charged with a merchant account, such as an application fee, membership fee, setup fee, gateway fee, and others. It is a good idea to carefully check the terms associated by a particular merchant account provider before signing on for an account.
When approved for an Internet based merchant account, you can quickly set to work arranging your Website and preparing to accept customers credit payments. An initial step is to make sure the site is attractive and functional. Arrange it with the help of a Web designer, if needed, to be sure it will be easily located by search engines and to hold visitors interest when they arrive at your site. You can use colorful images, interesting surveys, free articles, and other information in addition to posting data about your products and services. Change some of the information periodically, perhaps every week or month, to make sure only timely facts are included, or customers will soon lose interest and move on to another site that is updated more frequently. You can offer occasional discounts or sales items to make it worth the customers time to shop at your site, and to check back often. Paying by credit card is another bonus for those who want to purchase items quickly without the hassle of using a third-party payment system or mailing a check.
Dont let the competition outdistance you in the rush to enter the electronic age of business. Get a head start by applying for your Internet based merchant account.
Practice Makes Perfect: Changing Your Communication Habits One Step At a Time
Feb 4th
We are what we do repeatedly,
Excellence, therefore, is not an act,
It is a habit.
– Aristotle
The concept of practice applies to any skill that you want to cultivate. If you take up a new musical instrument, you will need to practice a while before you’re ready to give your first concert. In Aikido, the martial art I study and teach, we get on the mat many times each week to practice and perfect our technique.
Improving our communication habits also requires practice. The problem with holding difficult conversations is we often find ourselves in performance mode before we have the chance. It is important to learn the skills of effective communication and to take the time to practice them.
There are many excellent books, teachers, and workshops that will teach the skills, then help you to practice and improve. Seek them out. Make a commitment to read one book or attend a workshop every few months.
You can also learn from your successful conversations as well as the ones that don’t turn out as expected. By bringing awareness to what you did well and what you might have done differently, you gradually become more proficient. Here are some ways to bring that awareness to bear in the moment, and to continue to practice communicating more clearly and purposefully:
Increase Awareness. Notice whether your communication style is accomplishing your goals. If not, try something different.
Acknowledge. What is your positive hope for the communication? What is theirs? Recognize that you are both doing your best, and give yourself and your partner the benefit of the doubt.
Keep it safe. Maintain a calm, centered attitude, a respectful demeanor, and a positive purpose.
Cultivate curiosity. Develop an open, curious, and interested frame of mind. Regardless of what your conversation partner says, try to see their centered intent and respond appropriately.
Practice, Practice, Practice. Try new techniques and learn from them. If you tend toward a passive and accommodating style, try offering a different opinion on occasion. If the opposite is true and you are on the talkative side, stop yourself and listen more. Ask questions. Try being curious.
A tourist stopped a New Yorker on the street and asked: How do you get to Carnegie Hall? The New Yorker replied: Practice! An old joke, but a good one. The point is that change takes place gradually over time. Try one adjustment today. Review the suggestions above, and pick one. Let me know what happens. Take time to enjoy your newfound power. And most of all have fun!
Getting Kids Moving Can Be A Slam Dunk
Feb 4th
Run, walk, jump, dance-do whatever it takes to get the whole family moving.
That’s the advice parents are getting as the weight of the nation’s children continues to climb.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the rate of obesity in the U.S. has more than doubled for preschoolers and adolescents, and it has more than tripled for children ages 6 to 11 in the past 30 years.
Fortunately, you don’t need to get your child a personal trainer. Here are some tips to help:
• Be a good example. Take a walk. Go for a swim. Sign up for a class.
• Instead of always relying on the car, take walks with the kids, ride bikes.
• Take the kids to the park .
• Celebrate birthdays at parks, water parks, skating rinks and other active places.
• On weekends and during vacations, introduce kids to fun activities. Go swimming, hiking, ride bikes, jump rope, play tag, kickball, catch, any activity that involves motion.
• If it’s raining outside, orga-nize a treasure hunt in the house, one that involves lots of running up and down stairs.
• Get kids interested in playing sports. Take them to games, if possible. You can also use entertaining movies such as “Like Mike 2: Streetball,” in which legendary, magical high-tops find their way into the eager young hands of a pint-size basketballer with a big ambition: to rise to the top of the fast, gritty, no-holds-barred world of high-stakes “Streetball.”
In this DVD, hoop dreams become a reality, as Jerome Jenkins Jr., or “Triple-J,” earns the respect of his friends when the mysterious sneakers make him drive and dunk like the legendary Air Jordan. With hot streetball action and comedy, it’s a feel-good movie that can get kids moving.
• Be sure to keep an open mind if your daughter wants to play ice hockey and your son prefers dance.
Children should do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day and 60 minutes if they want to lose weight.
Regular exercise can help improve the quality of your children’s lives now and later on. It can help prevent diseases such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes.
You Can Custom Fit Your Vehicle
Feb 4th
Part of the fun of owning a car is giving it your own look. Sure, some cars come fully equipped with all the bells and whistles, but they lack one thing: your personal touch. Starting back in the 1950s when customizing cars really took off, enthusiasts have been modifying their cars to suit their own purposes. Lets take a look at some ways you can make your car a real stand out.
Under the Hood: The most obvious customizing for your engine compartment is a cold air intake, designed to increase power to the engine. A cold air intake changes the appearance of your cars engine bay with custom colors such as rad red, silver, chrome, powder coated blue, and more.
On the Hood: Hood protectors, also known as car bras, will give your car a bold, aggressive, and cool look. Other ideas include installing hood scoops and vents.
Up Front: Fender flares, bumper protectors, front fascia, and head light covers are all the rage. Add in custom fitted fog lights and you have a real show stopper on your hands.
To the Sides: Paintable rear side window covers will distinguish your model from all cars out there. Paintable side skirts are another crowd pleaser.
Bringing up the Rear: Altezza style tail light lens assemblies, which are available in chrome or paintable black. Some motorists are opting for paintable or blacked out tail light covers too for that special look. Adding a spoiler or a rear skirt are two additional awesome looking accessories for any car.
Under it All: Performance exhaust systems are all the rage. They are expensive but worth it in many drivers eyes. Increased performance, a better look, and a million mile warranty are some of the appeals of this mod.
On the Inside: Who said floor mats or floor liners have to be boring? Custom fitted Highland floor mats or Husky cargo liners give your interior a clean, sharp look and protect expensive carpeting and flooring. Seat covers, shifter knobs, and gauge covers are all popular add-ons with owners today.
To the Wheels: Some cars are now custom fitted with wheel spacers which permit wheel stance to be widened, thereby improving handling. Wheel dust shields are also popular to help keep alloys and tires clean.
So, there you have it. Manufacturers of custom fitting accessories have been burning the midnight oil to bring to you products that can truly change the appearance of your car. Indeed, some models — including the Honda Civic — have over 200 custom designed accessories available. The more popular the car, the more likely your choices will be greater.
What Can Happen to You as a Victim of Identity Theft, Facts & Figures
Feb 3rd
Is identity theft really that serious? Thousands of people every year are victims of this terrible crime. Thieves use your personal information to commit fraud or other crimes in your name and can cause significant credit damage. Identifying information taken without your permission, such as your Social Security number (SSN), credit card number, or your drivers’ license, can be used to steal your identity.
The effects of identity theft are much greater than most people suspect. Victims can spend years trying to re-establish their credit and their good names. The cost of this process, both financially and emotionally, is often quite high. But there are options (see below).
Identity theft is a serious crime. The Federal Trade Commission reports identity theft as its number one source of complaints by consumers. The average victim pays more than $1,000 repairing the damage and loses an average of $6,767. A recent study by CBS News claims that a thief steals someone’s identity every 79 seconds.2 An estimated 750,000 people are victimized each year.3
How can you tell if you are a victim of identity theft? There are some clues. First, it’s important to always monitor the balances on your checking, savings, or other financial accounts. Keep an eye out for unexplained charges or withdrawals made without your permission. Carefully reading your monthly bank and credit card statements, then checking the amounts against your check register or other record-keeping method could catch a thief in the act of assuming your identity and spending your hard-earned money.
Identity thieves may change the address on one or more of your bills, so make sure you know when you usually receive specific notices. For instance, if you receive your credit card statement at the beginning of the month and it doesn’t arrive in the mail, this could signal an address change by an identity thief. Another clue that comes in the mail is a credit card for which you didn’t apply or a statement for a credit card that you have never used. Someone may have used your information to apply for a line of credit.
Also take note if you are getting phone calls from debt collection agencies, credit departments, or other companies regarding merchandise or services that you did not purchase. Someone may be acquiring goods and services in your name.
And finally, when applying for a line of credit, be aware of your credit standing. If you know you have a good credit rating and get turned down by a credit card company, this is a red flag that someone else may be sullying your rating. Even if you don’t know your credit score, always ask why you were declined and verify the reason against your credit report.
Once your identity has been stolen and your credit has been damaged, the long process of regaining your name and good standing could cost you more than inconvenience. Victims are unable to qualify for loans, to purchase houses and cars, and to pay for higher education. They may be refused job opportunities and even be arrested for crimes committed by the identity thief.
In the meantime, the criminal with your personal information may:
Go on a shopping spree with your credit or debit card account numbers. Thieves may also create counterfeit debit cards or checks. Merchandise can be sold and the criminals walk away with cash.
Open credit or checking accounts in your name with your SSN and date of birth. As the bills pile up, your credit report reflects the delinquent account.
Have your credit card statements sent to a phony address. Without the bills as a reference, it may take you a while to realize your account is being used.
Take out loans in your name for big purchases, such as a new car.
Set up telephone or internet service in your name.
Avoid the responsibilities of debt or an impending eviction by filing bankruptcy using your SSN.
Give your name to police when being arrested. If the criminal is released on bond but fails to appear for the court date, police may issue an arrest warrant for you.
If you have need to contact the three main credit bureaus, go to www.apscreen.com to find out more.
Protecting yourself against identity theft takes a little extra time, but in comparison to the time, effort, and money it takes to reclaim your name once it has been stolen, the vigilance is well worth it.
Failing To Plan Your Business Financing Can Be A Death Sentence For Your Business
Feb 3rd
Most businesses start out thinking the first thing they need is a great business plan. The popular myth is that potential lenders will place great stock in your business plan as a major consideration for approving the financing you need.
While a well written business plan will assist you when you are seeking financing, it is far down on the lenders list behind things such as your business management teams experience, your past business successes and your lending character . Having a plan for accessing the business capital you need to execute your business plan is what is required to bring your business success. Not having a viable business financing plan is the direct cause of why 90% of all new businesses fail.
Your lending character means the lender sees you having the ability and stability to repay the loan. They also ask how far they believe you can take the business to maximize the potential earnings and therefore their chances of getting repaid.
The first thing a lender is going to look at is how did you structure the business and were you responsible and knowledgeable in that. Are you Incorporated or an LLC?? If not you are declined for a business loan and everything becomes based solely on you as an individual. Did you do your EIN, State, business licenses and bank filings correctly? If not, you are declined because lenders require attention to detail.
A simple business credit report check by a lender will quickly show whether or not you are even in the ballpark for getting approved for financing. If the lender finds that you havent bothered to insure that your business has active reports with all three major business credit reporting agencies, then of course you are immediately declined.
Next, the lender will look at the character of your business credit reports. What do they say about your business? What kind of payment histories have you had with debts that are easy to get such as vendor trade lines, small business credit cards, equipment leases, etc? If your business has no credit history or very minimal history then no lender will even consider your business for a larger loan when you have no track record of paying smaller debts.
If you pass these simple tests, now a lender will get to the heart of you business loan application and it is only at this point that you even get the opportunity to present your funding request. Unfortunately as high as 90% of all business loan applications never get to this point, because most business owners never take the time to complete the initial steps.
So you have made it this far, The next question you need to ask is what is a lender going to want to see? Debt service! Here is where the lender finally looks at your business plan (or at least the financial pat of it) to determine if your business can debt service the loan. To make this determination a lender will test the reality of your numbers. Basically this means do your numbers add up and do they make sense.
If you dont know anything about accounting you had better get help. When a lender looks at your projected financial statement and finds simple accounting errors, then in most cases you will again be declined. They dont want to lend money to someone who cannot produce a simple proof and loss statement; or someone that cant balance a balance sheet. There is a lot of help out there, get some.
Next, a lender will look at the market niche section of your business plan. While most business owners think that this is the place that sets them apart from the competition, it actually is the part where lenders will compare you to your competition. Here is where lenders must see that you have done you market research. Can the revenue claims that you are making in your financial projections be backed up by the actual market demographics for your specific business industry, location, customer base, etc.? It essentially comes down to the need for your product or service.
All of this can seem overwhelming and in truth it can be. It is the reason that 97% of all business loan applications get declined. The overriding reason is that business owners are not taught this in school and typically only gain this knowledge through years of brutal experience that normally includes having one or two failed businesses under their belts.
This will give you plenty of information to get you started on putting together a business funding request. In my next article I will cover some of the other aspects of your business plan. For a full version of an excellent business funding guide do a search on Google, Yahoo, or MSN for “Business Funding Workbook”.

Binge Eating – Men Also At Risk
Feb 2nd
Binge Eating Disorder affects just about as many men as it does women, even though the stereotype is that eating disorders are thought to be a womens disorder. This stereotype is incorrect. There are 25 million people that struggle daily with Binge Eating Disorder. Out of that 25 million, you may be surprised to know that 40% are men. According to Wikipedia.com, this means that three women for every two men suffer from Binge Eating Disorder.
There are different reasons as to why men develop Binge Eating Disorder. One cause is if they play or played sports sometime in their life that required them to be thin or to lose a lot of weight for a particular competition, such as a wrestling match or running. Football players and body builders are still at risk, but it is lower since these sports require some meat and muscles in order to be successful. Another reason is that the chosen profession calls for thinness, such as modeling and acting. Men feel a pressure, just as women do, to maintain a level of thinness when they are in the public eye and when they are in looked at.
A man is more at risk for developing Binge Eating Disorder at a older age than a woman does, especially if the man had a tendency to be overweight at a child. This is because growing up a man believes that he needs to be strong and be able to protect not only himself, but also a female. If he is thin, this translates to fragile and he will see himself as not being powerful and not being able to get the things that he wants in life because he is considered weak.
Treatment for men is the same as women; although, men are more reluctant to visit a professional since eating disorders are considered to be female difficulties. The professional will go into detail to find out why the man comforts himself with food. Once the reason why he binges comes to the surface, the professional can give him ideas of how to change his behaviors. Once this happens and once the man feels comfortable with the professional, then the journey to recovery begins.
Clearly binge eating disorder is not only a female disorder, as many males are affected too. Regardless of being male or female, it is important to admit that your relationship with food is not healthy and to seek help on how to make it healthy once again.

Get Into Shape With Volleyball
Feb 2nd
How are you feeling these days about your level of fitness or what you body looks like? Are you worried about bathing suit season? If so volleyball is the perfect get into shape activity. Dont worry if you have never played volleyball before. You can still play on a league and use it as one of your cardio and strength training workouts.
Most YMCAs support volleyball leagues at every skill level. If you are unsure of which league you should join, just speak with the activities director and he or she can share more league and team information with you.
Volleyball can be a great strength training activity because the basic moves of volleyball work your core muscle groups. So even if you can not commit to joining a league right now, just find a partner to pepper with and you will work your abdominals, glutes, and large leg group muscles. Pepper is a warm up drill for every level of players where partners bump, set, and then spike. The goal is to see how long you can keep the ball going. This is a great exercise to do on the beach, in the gym, or in your backyard.
Volleyball can really get you into shape because of the cardio workout it provides. Continuous play requires players to be constantly moving. These short sprints provide just the fat burning workout many of us are looking for. The best part is that you are so focused on the game that you really dont think about how hard our body is working. This is way better then going to the gym to workout on a machine where you are staring at how much time you have left the whole time you are on the machine.
Another great reason that getting into shape with volleyball is a great choice is the camaraderie it provides. No doubt you will make some great workout friends and acquaintances if you join a volleyball league. Some leagues play year round or play tournaments in the off season. The great thing about volleyball is that you can play as much or as little as you want. Give your workout some variety by adding volleyball to get and stay into shape.

Advanced Options for Today’s Braces
Feb 2nd
Orthodontic technologies have greatly improved the effectiveness, comfort, and aesthetic appeal of wearing braces for today’s patients. Many people who were once concerned about having to wear large metal brackets and thick bands on their teeth for years are now enjoying healthy new smiles thanks to shorter, more discreet orthodontic care.
New Choices for Traditional Braces
With traditional braces, brackets are glued to each tooth and held together by a metal loop that goes around the entire row of teeth. Modern advances have eliminated the thick steel bands and heavy brackets of the past. Today, stronger glues mean smaller, more tightly bonded brackets. Thick bands have been replaced by thin wires that are not only are harder to see, but also more effective at adjusting teeth.
These smaller, stronger components translate into fewer adjustment appointments, and ultimately a shorter treatment length. On top of that, they also improve oral health. Thick brackets and bands were difficult to clean around, and many patients suffered from tooth discoloration as a result. Over time, the exposed enamel around each bracket darkened from inadequate brushing, while the color underneath each bracket was protected; when the brackets were removed, lighter spots could be seen in the centers of many teeth. Thankfully, today’s braces rarely cause such a problem, provided patients brush regularly.
Consumer demand has also led to many cosmetic choices being made available to orthodontic patients. While stainless steel brackets are still most common, they can also be fashioned from ceramics or plastics, making them blend in more with the teeth. (Plastic brackets are discouraged for longer treatment schedules, as they tend to discolor over time.) Brackets, wires, and elastics are all available in a rainbow of colors. Clear components are also available, which make braces even harder to detect.
Invisible Braces
The latest news in orthodontics that has many people excited is the development of “invisible” braces. Instead of using brackets and wires, the orthodontist instead develops snugly-fitting molds of the top and bottom rows of teeth. While in place, these molds apply firm but gentle pressure to misaligned teeth, encouraging them to move and straighten over time.
Computer technology helps the orthodontist to map out a progressive plan to properly align the teeth, broken down into multiple steps. At each step, the current mold is replaced with a new one that provides slightly more pressure than the last. Over time, the series successfully leads to straightened rows of teeth, without any need to undergo invasive braces installation and removal.
Generally, each mold is worn for two weeks. They must be worn all day and all night, but can be removed for eating and cleaning. This prevents the tooth discoloration that often accompanies traditional braces. Most patients experience slight discomfort on the first day of a new mold, but this disappears quickly as their teeth adjust to their new positions.
Invisible braces cost more than traditional braces, but for some, they are well-worth the extra investment. Not only are they easily hidden (unless someone is standing right in front of you), but they can also be removed on rare occasions, such as wedding photos, where someone would otherwise be uncomfortable being seen in braces.
Invisible braces cannot be used to treat every case. Even if they can be tried, traditional braces still may provide a higher degree of success. Only an orthodontist can tell for certain whether or not someone makes a good candidate for invisible braces.
How To Survive A Good Review
Feb 2nd
When the first reviews for my most recent novel (Great Sky Woman, Random House 2006) started coming in, my emotions went through the usual roller coaster. The first, from Publishers Weekly, was 90% positive, but mentioned that, in their opinion, it was slow in spots. My stomach sank. Slow? In spots? Oh my Godall is lost!
The second review came in two weeks later. This one, from Booklist, used words like magnificent and engaging and adventure on a grand scale.
I sighed. Boy, oh boy, did I need to hear that. Why? Because I am an insecure artist. Because I spend, on average, two years researching and one year writing my novels. Because I care so very much about each and every one of my literary children. Because I pour my life into every project I work on, break my head open, remove the protective walls from around my heart. I have to, because that is the only way to access my talent. I CANT do less than my very bestthat would immediately devolve to hack work, and that I cannot do.
Some say to ignore reviews, that they are only the opinions of people who, often, are jealous of work they themselves could not create. I choose not to embrace that opinion. To me, reviews are the opinions of informed, professional readers. Such people are not necessarily any better informed than the average reader, but what they have to say is certainly worthy of attention.
To be absolutely frank, there have been times I curled up and cried because a reviewer I respected disliked my work. And other times when handsprings across the living room were the order of the day. Such violent ups and downs can hardly be good for your blood pressure (let alone the household pets) but for an artist who cares, really cares about reaching out to the world, about creating a dialogue with readers present and unborn, there seems little choice.
An artist needs feedback. We must know whether what we do communicates the message intended. That doesnt mean all glory and complement. Harsh but honest criticism can help an artist understand what the public sees when they read the work, watch the film, view the dance. To the degree that such work is intended to make a statement, to communicate a state of emotion or elusive concept, we MUST know how the public reacts.
But there are times when the good review is more damaging than the bad one. It often seems that a large proportion of artists are people who crave a deeper, more fluid connection with the outside world. Who in early life felt their voice stifled, felt invisible in the middle of a crowd. So they learn to speak their truth in some other form, and a creative performer was born.
Deep within such an artist is a driving, gnawing, ravenous urge to be loved, respected, seen, heard. It is the stifled urge of a child dancing in the living room for the guests, saying look at me! Im special!
Of course, attention isnt always on the artist herself: sometimes we merely want to draw attention to some cause, or effect, or external reality or philosophy we consider important or of interest. At the heart of all of this, however, is the sense that our perceptions are worthy, our hearts strong, our song as valid as that of any other warbler in the forest.
And when those reviews come in, we can either read them at an emotional arms length, or we can take them to heart, suffer the slings and arrowsand rejoice in the victories.
Which are more important? Im not certain. But when those positive reviews come, I notice that I dont take them as seriously, as deeply, as the negative ones. I dont dare. That little boy inside me wants too desperately to believe that he is loved and appreciated, that he has made something worthwhile. When the positive reviews come, it is easy to listen to the accolades, to glow in the applause
But God help you if you ever need it. Then, with an exquisitely perverse precision, it will be withdrawn. Chasing after the approval makes it dissolve, and we become like a third-rate comic frantically mugging for a once-appreciative audience, begging them to laugh until they are embarrassed for him.
I love the process of writing. I love the books themselves. I love my audience. And I love those reviews, too much, it sometimes seems. And at those times, a little voice whispers in my ear: “The writing isnt for them. Never for them. It was before they were. And if they turn their backs, you will write still. Dont be lulled by the fact that todays reviews are positive. Dont be frustrated if tomorrows reviews are bad. Listen to the voice in your heart, the one that whispers of discipline, and pain, and creative ecstasy. That voice was there at the beginning, and will be there at the end.”
That voice, and no other, can you trust
Not Always A Girl’s Best Friend
Feb 2nd
People like jewelry — it’s an obsession that is practically based on instinct. People tend to like shiny things and, if done right, jewelry is very attractive no matter what the occasion. However, there are some caveats to be considered when talking about and deciding on the timely use of jewelry. Factors like lifestyle and finances are understandable deterrents to keeping jewelry around, whether in mass quantities or just a few select pieces. On certain occasions, for certain people, there are other potential problems. While an allergy to nickel is considerably minor as far as everyday medical concerns go, it can still get rather annoying if you’re into jewelry. After all, nearly every form of jewelry on the market today has some amount of nickel in it.
Why More Traffic Should Not Be Your Goal
Feb 2nd
Are you one of those internet marketers who faithfully believe that if they could only increase the traffic to their site they could make a killing?
This is the way most people think. More traffic = higher profits.
But that’s not always true. If it is going to do you any good, it has to be ‘targeted’ traffic. What’s the difference?
Targeted traffic consists of people who are interested in your product or service and would be more likely to spend money to get it from you.
Non-targeted traffic consists of the rest of the world. These individuals are not interested in buying what you have and, therefore, will not part with their cash for it.
Since time and money are valuable resources, don’t waste them trying to promote your site to people with no interest in your product. Instead, find out where your targeted visitors spend their time. Then you can promote your site there.
For example, let’s say you want to promote a site called thebeachesofaruba.com and one way you will do so is by posting messages in online forums and including a link back to the site in your signature.
Now think about which forums you can post in. There are many popular forums that discuss internet marketing and they have thousands of members. That’s a large market, but it is not targeted to your website. Sure, some of them may be interested in an Aruba vacation, but its more likely they are on the forum to read about internet marketing.
A much more efficient choice would be to find forums that actually discuss Aruba, the Caribbean, travel, or some other related topic. The forum you find may only have a few hundred (or even a few dozen) members. But 100% of them are interested in the product, service, or website you are promoting.
Just two more important things to consider:
1. Always read the forum rules before posting. Not all forums allow links to be posted.
2. Do not just write one sentence posts just to get your link posted. That’s considered spam.
Instead, write useful and informative posts that will portray you as an expert on the field. People will be more likely to click on your link if you build a reputation on the forum first.

Starter Boxes
Need help starting your engines? Starter boxes can give you the boost needed to break in your new RC vehicle or just make the starting process easier.
The starter box will eliminate the need to pull-start your RC nitro car. Some car models are more difficult than others to pull start and having a starter box removes the problem and gets your vehicle going in no time.
RC Tools
Specialized tools help you keep your vehicle in top form. Some of the recommended additions to your standard tool box are:
Magnetic Balancer: reduce wear and tear on your RC vehicle by ensuring that rotating parts are properly balanced. Ideal for balancing new tires before hitting the road.
Gear Puller: avoid stripping the set screws by using a gear puller.
Temperature Gauge: test the temperature while tuning your engine without risking a burn.
Tool Pouch: keep all your tools handy and organized to make pit stops and tuning an easier task.
Glow Plug Wrench: makes the necessary task of changing glow plugs easier and quicker.
Glow Plugs
You will definitely need spare glow plugs on hand otherwise you may have to cut your driving time short if your glow plugs fail. Even new plugs can be faulty so having a small kit that includes a glow plug igniter, charger, spare glow plugs and a glow plug wrench is a good idea so that you can make a change on the course instead of ending the fun.
Fuel
If youre going to drive a nitro car youre going to need fuel. The fuel used for RC nitro cars is specially designed for optimum performance. Using the fuel recommended in your owners manual will provide your vehicle with exactly the right combination of synthetic and castor oils.
To make fueling easier you can select a fuel filler bottle that fits your needs. Several sizes are available and they are equipped with long, angled tips to speed up the refueling process and prevent spills.
Always keep your fuel tightly capped since moisture will quickly be absorbed from the air and ruin the fuel. You might also consider including a fuel cleaner and rags in your stash to clean up any spills and drips.
Air Filter Oil
Treating your nitro cars air filter with special air filter oil will improve the ability of the filter to keep out dust and dirt while also extending the life of your cars engine. Over or under oiling the filter will affect the performance and possibly damage the engine. Only use the oil specified for your type of filter since using the wrong oil can disintegrate the filter.
Be sure to let your oiled air filter dry for up to half an hour before installing it to avoid the excess oil from choking the system. Carry pre-oiled filters for changes rather than using a recently oiled filter or dry filter.
These are a few of the recommend RC car accessories you should be sure to keep with you when racing or just playing around with your RC vehicle. You will find many more products that are designed to help you fix or add on to your vehicle by shopping online or at your local hobby shop.
